Woodtype fonts

Image
The first mural found in downtown Tampa and the second two, part of a new campaign for apple beer show many stylistic similarities to woodtype fonts of the late 18th and early 19th century. The use of a 3-d lettering in the first mural is the same that was extremely common in the wood cut lettering. The cut out of the lettering out of a colored background that was also a new design element that became popular with woodtype fonts and posters as shown in the first image, is used in the third image with the word fortunately and Apple beer. The second image uses both the 3-d style lettering and the cut outs both are throw backs to the beginning of the industrial revolution. All three images uses multi colors in there fills and outlines of the lettering that is similar to the wood type fonts.

Hand Lettering

Image
This two pieces of calligraphy found in Comm Arts remind me of this hand lettering from the presentation. They all have a relaxed organic feel to them that gives them their hand written feel. They are also closer together like the unicals unlike the momenumental capitals.

Book of Kells

Image
This image reminds me of the Book of Kells with its overly decorative flourishes that the different strokes create. This design has the same fluid motion of the much older designs.

Trajan Column

Image
The schools logo reminds me of capitals Monumentalis with the wide set of the M that has an extremely wide middle as it does in the M in Tampa. The A is also bottom heavy in both fonts with the negative space on the top of the A much smaller then the negative space on the bottom. They both also have serifs which gives them both a formal aesthetic.
